During my residency, I worked in conversation with Governors Island’s architecture, treating walls, surfaces, and unobserved details as collaborators rather than backdrops. Through rubbings, I approached the built environment as an archive, using touch and transfer to excavate traces of time embedded in the island’s structures.

I became especially drawn to cracks in walls. What first appeared as signs of wear gradually became something else: abstract entry points, portals, openings into imagined histories and alternative narratives. These fissures offered a way of thinking about architecture as porous and alive, shaped by cycles of occupation, weathering, repair, and transformation.

The works that emerged move between documentation and abstraction, collecting impressions of surfaces while remaining open to speculation. They are records of contact between body and site, past and present, material and memory.

RU Governors Island: Exquisite Landscape Mural Workshop

May 27, 2026

Residency Unlimited at Governors Island is presenting my Exquisite Landscape Mural Workshop. It is based on the Surrealist game the Exquisite Corpse which utilizes collaborative drawing assemblage to create improvised fantastical compositions. Participants are divided into groups to fill in sections of the mural based on continued lines from the previous group. They are also given smaller sheets to practice with each other and take home. No prior experience is necessary and all materials are provided.

RU 2023 NYC-Based Artists-in-Residence

March 29, 2023

Thrilled and honored that my collab Abang-guard (with artist Jevijoe Vitug) is part of Residency Unlimited’s (RU) 2023 NYC-Based Artist Residents. Other artists that were selected include Tatiana Arocha, Miatta Kawinzi and Jodie Lyn-Kee-Chow.

The cohort was selected from an open call for artists who identify as Black, Indigenous and People of Color who have research-based practices that fill in gaps in historical knowledge. During the three month residencies from April 3 - June 30, 2023, Abang-guard will focus on the research and development of the history of Little Manilla in Woodside, Queens, and the intersections of immigration, labor, and visibility. We will be participating in a culminating group exhibition at PS122 Gallery in June.

The artists were selected from more than 180 applicants by a panel of three arts professionals: Elvira Clayton, Rachel Gugelberger, and Dario Mohr.
