I’m honored to present for Every Woman Biennial 2026 at Pen + Brush Gallery three manang (Tagalog for “sister”) time capsules bearing the names of Filipina women who stood at the frontlines of the Delano Grape Strike of 1965: Maria Rifo, Guadalupe Pena, and Esperanza Pulmano. They fought for dignity, better working conditions, a living wage, and a retirement home for their older, single, unhoused brothers.
Mexican and Filipino women were the unsung heroes behind the United Farm Workers movement, less visible than their union brothers, yet essential as the backbone of collective organizing, care, and survival. Each capsule holds goods from Little Manila, Woodside. Offerings that layer time itself: a gesture from the present to honor past elders, and seed future acts of remembrance.
