During my residency, I worked in conversation with Governors Island’s architecture, treating walls, surfaces, and unobserved details as collaborators rather than backdrops. Through rubbings, I approached the built environment as an archive, using touch and transfer to excavate traces of time embedded in the island’s structures.
I became especially drawn to cracks in walls. What first appeared as signs of wear gradually became something else: abstract entry points, portals, openings into imagined histories and alternative narratives. These fissures offered a way of thinking about architecture as porous and alive, shaped by cycles of occupation, weathering, repair, and transformation.
The works that emerged move between documentation and abstraction, collecting impressions of surfaces while remaining open to speculation. They are records of contact between body and site, past and present, material and memory.
